FBC Carthage E-News for September 10, 2019

FBC Carthage E-News
September 10, 2018

Good Morning,

With just one week until our Fall Tent Revival this is an important week of prayer, witness, and preparation.  Our Fall Tent Revival is September 16-19 beginning at 7:00 PM each evening in the upper parking lot at Crump Paris Park in South Carthage.  The churches from the New Salem Baptist Association are working together to reach our county for Jesus Christ.  Dr. David Leavell, Pastor of First Baptist Church Millington and the current President of the Tennessee Baptist Convention will be our Evangelist and the Nesbitt family will be leading in worship each evening.  The theme will be “The John 3:16 Challenge.”  Invite your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors to join you for the Tent Revival.    Here is a video challenge from our Evangelist, David Leavell to share John 3:16 this week:  https://www.fbcmillington.org/john316

You can also use the Tent Revival promo on the First Baptist Church Carthage Facebook page to share with all your friends.  Even if you have posted the video promo before, post it again so more of your friends will see it and be reminded.  It is pinned at the top of our page to make it easier to locate and share.  Check it out:   https://www.facebook.com/firstbaptistcarthage/

One of the most important things we can ever do in preparation for revival is Pray.  All revivals and major moves of God have begun with prayer.  Take time to pray for our county to come to Jesus.  Pray for God’s Holy Spirit to move in amazing ways through our hearts and lives that many will come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior.  Pray for those you know who are lost and unchurched.  Ask the Lord for boldness to invite them to come with you to the Tent Revival.

Make a commitment to attend every night of the Tent Revival next week.  This is an important week in the life of our church and in the lives of those who will be saved and renewed in the services.  One of those people may be you or a member of your family.  But, as the saying goes, “You must be present to win.”  See you at the Tent Revival!

Attention Men!  You are needed to help erect the tent for the revival this Thursday, September 13 at 5:00 PM.  Meet in the upper baseball parking lot to raise the tent!

Our Tent Revival Evangelist, David Leavell writes often for the Tennessee Baptist and Reflector as the President of the Tennessee Baptist Convention.  Here is an article and a podcast from Dr. Leavell on the importance of sharing our faith with others:  http://baptistandreflector.org/leavell-desire-needed-to-share-gospel/

All men are asked to come up this Sunday, September 16 for a special music presentation of “The King Is Coming.”  You will join in on the chorus.  You are also invited to rehearsal on Wednesday night at 7:30 PM following the Wednesday Evening Service.  Here is the Cathedral Quartet’s version of this great song:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LscdVVeTQc

On a personal note, thank you again for the generous anniversary gift in June.  I am sending it this week as my initial payment toward my and Fran’s trip to Israel in January 2019.

Invite someone this week to attend the Tent Revival with you beginning Sunday, September 16.  Have a blessed week,
Bro. Tim

Here is the news for the week:

·        We had the initial planning meeting for our Mission Trip to New York City on November 29-December 3 to distribute “Coats for the City”.  Anyone interested in being on this team is asked to meet this coming Sunday, September 16 as we continue planning and get our airline tickets.  Bring a credit card if possible.  A description of the trip and details are posted at the end of this E-News.  Everyone is also asked to begin collecting coats to send to this outreach of New City Church and consider being a part of the mission team.

·        The September Church Business Meeting will be this Wednesday, September 12
at 6:30 PM in the Sanctuary.

·        The Community Food Distribution will be this Wednesday, September 12 at the Ag Center.  Volunteers are needed around 9:30 AM and food distribution begins around 11:00 PM.

·        The Women on Missions is hosting a “Soul Food Café” for the students at the Tennessee Tech Baptist Collegiate Ministry this Thursday, September 13.  We will meet in the Christian Life Center at 9:30 AM.  Volunteers are welcome to help with the serving.

·        There will be a special “Lights for Recovery” Candlelight Prayer Vigil at the steps of the Old Courthouse on the square this Thursday, September 13 at 5:30 PM.  There will be special prayer for those struggling with addiction, those in recovery, families affected by addiction, and in memory of the 44 persons who have died in Smith County this year from drug related causes.  This is a growing crisis in our community that affects each and everyone.  Join us as we pray for God’s deliverance in the lives of the people of Smith County.

·        Friday, September 14 will be our 4th Tailgate party before the Smith County High School football game.  Join us in the church parking lot at 5:00 PM for fun, food, and inflatables for the kids.  Better yet, come at 4:30 PM and help us set up for the Tailgate.  This has been a good outreach to the community.

·        The Young at Heart will have a luncheon trip to the Rose Garden Resturant in Silver Point on Tuesday, September 18.  We will leave from the church parking lot at 11:00 PM.  All adults 55+ are invited to join in the fun.

·        The church will have the inflatables again this year at the William Walton Days on the square, Saturday, September 29.  Volunteers are needed throughout the day to monitor the inflatables and interact with the people as they come.  This is a wide-open opportunity to touch our community. Wear your green “Game On” mission shirts and join in this one day outreach event.

MISSION TRIP INFORMATION
We are so excited you are praying about serving with New City Church to make Christ known in our community! Here is some basic information to help you start planning your mission trip! We look forward to serving with you!

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES
NCC mission teams serve throughout LIC, Queens, and other areas of metro NYC through many different experience.  NCC is located in Long Island City, Queens on the 7 Train subway line. Our goal is to serve our neighborhood first, 7 train neighborhoods second, and then other areas of NYC through partnerships with local organizations and churches. Although most of your week will be spent serving LIC or the 7 train line, your team may be asked to partner with one of our partners to make ministry happen in another area.

TRANSPORTATION
Flights into New York (LaGuardia) as of Friday
                        11/29-12/3       $178-222
                        11/30-12/3       $193-222
                        11/29-12/1       $191-239
Once in NYC the easiest and most convenient way to get around is  public transportation. Subway and bus routes are very reliable and some areas are even walkable. You can buy a seven day unlimited Metro Card for $31 that gives you unlimited rides on all subways and buses. Please bring cash for this or plan to pay separate as machines will only let you do two Metro cards per credit card.

LODGING
New York School of Urban Ministry (NYSUM): Located in Long Island City, NYSUM hosts more than 5,000 short-term missionaries each year for short-term missions in the city. $40 per night

FOOD
Eating out is always more expensive, but is necessary when you travel. We recommend you try to do breakfast where you lodge (or cheaply on the street if you prefer) and sack lunches will save each person $6-8 a day.  Going out for dinner can range wildly in price. We recommend $15-20 per person for dinner. You can find meals cheaper than this, like pizza, etc., but most dinner meals will be in that range.
If you plan to eat out every meal we would recommend a $50/day budget.

FIVE THINGS FOR FUN
We want you to love New York City as much as we do! For that reason we give you plenty of time to experience all that the city has to offer and if you would like more time plan to come early or stay a couple days after your trip! Its not much but here are five recommendations for site seeing.
Time Square: Free and fun, lots of shopping and sights and great food as well.
Top of the Rock: Famous home of NBC that provides spectacular city views.
9/11 Memorial: Free, but you should reserve tickets online in advance
Central Park: You could do some rickshaw tours or bike tours or just go hang out
Statue of Liberty: If you want to get on the island you need to give yourself a minimum of 4 hours to go through security and take the ferry to the island and onto Ellis Island and back. Another option is to take the free Staten Island ferry that goes right by the State of Liberty but does not make a stop. The views are great and it takes far less time.
