First Baptist Church Carthage News for August 8, 2017

FBC Carthage E-News

August 7, 2017

Good Morning,

Thank you to everyone who helped in the ministry booth at the Smith County Fair.  We had a great group each of the nights and represented FBC Carthage very well.  The Fair gives us an opportunity to impact a lot of people in our county.  I saw and talked to people I have not seen in quite a while.  Having a booth is more than handing out water, giving sno- cones and painting faces.  The fair booth is a ministry point to our community.  Thank you to all who served in the name of Jesus.

Please pray for the local school students and teachers as they begin a new school year on Tuesday, August 8.  For some of the children, this is their first year in a new school and there is a combination of excitement and fear as they look toward Tuesday.  For others it is time to get re-connected to their friends.  For the seniors, this is a pivotal year as they face the emerging reality of their last year in high school.  Many emotions will be felt this week by the students and each one needs our prayers as they begin a new school year.

It was a blessing to have Gary Bates with Creation Ministries as our guest speaker yesterday in Sunday School and morning worship.  I have had several say that was the first Creation speaker they had heard.  Creation Ministries has many free articles on their website which provide additional information and understanding of the Biblical view of creation, origins, and the universe.  Check out the resources available to you at creation.com.  Also, if you are intrigued, as I am, by science fiction and the thoughts of UFO’s you might also want to check out the trailer for the new documentary Creation Ministries is producing at http://alienintrusion.com/.

Thank you to John and Rhonda Etheridge for hosting our end of summer Fireworks Spectacular.  We had a great crowd, delicious picnic, and an amazing fireworks show.  I believe this year’s fireworks were the best yet.  It’s always fun to end the summer with a BANG!

I received an email this weekend from one of our young adults who had to miss yesterday because of a serious family illness.  It was very encouraging to me and expressed my belief in the value and utmost importance of Sunday School.  Sunday School is the place where relationships are made, lives are touched, people are cared for, and the Bible is central.  In the email he said,

“I will not be able to make it tomorrow (Sunday) so please keep my mother in your prayers.  I hate to miss Sunday School because it is my favorite part of the week.  I love it and will miss everybody!!  I love that class so let Stephen and all of them know.  Hope to see you soon.”

We had a great first meeting of the Mission New York team.  There is still opportunity for you to be a part of this mission effort, October 5-9.  I have placed the information sheet at the bottom of this E-News.  Contact Bro. Tim if you have questions.

Congratulations to Steve and Cindy Dowell on the birth of their first grandbaby, Elinor Rose Gomez-Dowell.

Have a wonderful week and remember to pray for a safe start of the new school year.

Bro. Tim

·        On Sunday, August 20 we will be taking a special offering for New Salem Association of Baptists.  FBC Carthage is a part of 10 churches in Smith County that make up the New Salem Association of Baptists.  Last year the Association purchased a building in          Carthage for their new office space.  This offering will go toward the payment on that           building.

·        The Great American Eclipse will take place on August 21, 2017, two weeks from today.  Be making your preparations to see this once-in-a-lifetime event safely.  Viewing glasses are available at the Chamber of Commerce for only $1 a pair.  For more information on this special day, go to: http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/path_through_the_US.htm

·        A new semester of GriefShare will begin on Tuesday, August 22 at the Chamber of Commerce Building on Upper Ferry Road.  GriefShare is a 12-week support group for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one in death.  The sessions are Biblically-based and center around the teaching of well-known Christian counselors with testimonies of people who have traveled through the journey of grief.  GriefShare is sponsored by First Baptist Church Carthage, Bass Funeral Home and Sanderson Funeral Home.  There is no cost for the sessions and workbooks are available for $15.  For more information contact Bro Tim at (615) 735-1929 or by email tfrank@fbccarthage.com.

·        Here are the details for the Mission Trip to New York City, October 5-9, 2017.

Project:  Community Block Party  -  The team from FBC Carthage will come with a planned activity, supplies, and booth giveaways (such as candy or toy prizes). Activities should be fun, engaging, and targeted for children 4 to 7 years old. The supplies should fit in one duffle bag and giveaways should be fun prizes kids will want to win and not overtly Christian (NCC – New City Church -  will provide materials about our beliefs and church). Due to rain plan, please plan on being in LIC until 4pm Sunday.

Travel:  NCC highly recommends that teams fly to NYC. LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the closest airport and is easily accessible by public transportation. Once in NYC the easiest and most convenient way to get around is public transportation. Subway and bus routes are very reliable and some areas are even walkable. You can buy a seven day unlimited Metro Card for $31 that gives you unlimited rides on all subways and buses.

Airline prices are good right now in the $250-300 round trip range.

Lodging:  The lodging will be $40 per person per night at the NY School of Urban Ministry.

Additional Cost:  FBC Carthage will pay the $25 per person ministry fee for NCC.

Scholarship Assistance:  The Association has a mission fund that may pay toward the cost of your trip.  Application is available.

What to Expect:  NCC is located in Long Island City, Queens on the 7 Train subway line. Our goal is to serve our neighborhood first, 7 train neighborhoods second, and then other areas of NYC through partnerships with local organizations and churches. Although most of your week will be spent serving LIC or the 7 train line, your team may be asked to partner with one of our partners to make ministry happen in another area.

Food:  Eating out is always more expensive, but is necessary when you travel. We recommend you try to do breakfast where you lodge (or cheaply on the street if you prefer) and sack lunches will save each person $6-8 a day.  Going out for dinner can range wildly in price. We recommend $15-20 per person for dinner. You can find meals cheaper than this, like pizza, etc., but most dinner meals will be in that range.

If you plan to eat out every meal we would recommend a $50/day budget.

Fun Things:

Time Square: Free and fun, lots of shopping and sights and great food as well.

Top of the Rock: Famous home of NBC that provides spectacular city views.

9/11 Memorial: Free, but you should reserve tickets online in advance

Central Park: You could do some rickshaw tours or bike tours or just go hang out

Statue of Liberty: Take the free Staten Island ferry that goes right by the State of

Liberty but does not make a stop. The views are great and it takes far less time.
