First Baptist Church
e-News for July 28, 2008
Good Morning,
“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven (Matthew 5:16).”
Throughout this week I encourage each and every believer in Jesus Christ to let your light shine for Jesus. There are many people around you who are walking in darkness and need the light. You are the light. With Jesus living in you the scripture says “You are the light of the world.” Let it shine today.
After the service yesterday, one of our members came to me and suggested a slogan to go with the message on letting our light shine. See what you think:
“Be a moon, Reflect the Son.”
I like it myself. In fact I am considering this as a theme for the 5th Quarters beginning in August. The idea is that just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, so we are to reflect the Light of Jesus, the Son. Let others see Jesus in you this week.
On a personal note, my daughter Jill will be home from New Mexico in just two weeks. I am excited for her to meet you and get to know her new church family. Fran will be gone next week picking her up and driving her back so please pray for them as they travel.
Have a blessed week and remember to let your light shine.
Bro. Tim
Here’s the news for the week:
1. It’s hard to imagine but a new school year begins this Friday as students go for their first day. Pray for the students, teachers, and all those who work in the school system. In fact, this Sunday morning during the worship service we will have a special time of prayer for the teachers, administrators and workers. Invite a teacher to come with you to FBC Carthage this week.
2. This Sunday, August 3rd will also be our first observance of the Lord’s Supper together. I look forward to this special time of remembering the Lord Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. The Great Passage for the week will be Philippians 2:5-11.
3. The Smith County Fair begins Tuesday, July 29. We have special music from FBC Carthage at the Opening Ceremony at 5PM and on the Community Stage at 7PM. Also, it’s not too late to be a part of the FBC Carthage booth. We will be located in the big white tent, spot number 13, across from the Community Stage. A great location! I have copied the information sheet at the end of this e-News. For more information contact the church office at 735-1929.
4. Awanas begin Sunday, August 10 with a kick-off event at 5:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. All children ages 3 - 6th grade are encouraged to attend. Parents, check out the excitement of Awanas at www.awana.org. Also, remember that the Evening Worship Services will begin at 5:30 PM on August 10th for youth and adults.
5. During these next two weeks we will be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Smith County Helps Center. Please bring food this Sunday and next for the Center. On Wednesday night, August 13 we will take the food collected to the Helps Center at 7:30 PM and have a tour of the ministry.
6. Deacons, mark the August 11 Deacon Rally at First Baptist Gordonsville on your calendars. Here is the info from our Interim Director of Missions, Billie Friel:
Deacon Rally: August 11
As goes the deacons, so goes the rest of the church. Everything rises or falls on leadership. I (Billie Friel) have felt led for sometime to rally the deacons of our Association. In my brief time here, I've heard horror stories about what has been done--and more from what has not been done--by the deacons. On Monday Night of August 11, we want all the deacons and pastors of our Association to be present.
* We will have a delicious meal at 6:30 - prepared by Mrs. Erline White and
her staff.
* We will have some "Manly Man's Music".
* We will hear the great testimony of Jim Bell, an outstanding deacon
from FBC Mt. Juliet.
* We will examine from God's Word the role and ministry of the deacons
so be sure and bring your Bibles!
* We will have an opportunity to discuss with our church leaders how we
can be more effective deacons and glorify God and do good for the people
7. A great mission opportunity will be held Saturday, August 9 as the Association hosts a soccer tournament in conjunction with the Hispanic church that meets at FBC Carthage on Friday nights. We are asked to help during this outreach mission event. Here are the details from Billie Friel:
August 9: Christian Soccer Rally
Our Hispanic leader, Bro. Jorge, announces that we have 8 teams and over 100 children signed up for this great outreach event. It will be at the Soccer Field Park, between Carthage and Gordonsville, from 10 to 4:00. We need:
* 10-12 men to help put up the tent that we are renting from Fairview Baptist
Church
* Hot dogs, buns, and condiments----how can we cook them?
* Bottled Water,, ice,, coolers or buckets to keep them cold
* Tables
* People to help man the food distribution,, walk around and mingle as
Christian friends/counselors
* Garbage bags,,, clean-up detail at 4:00
This promises to be a great event. Bro. Jorge is a professional soccer player and recently conducted such an event at Wilson County--God blessed it. We will have a Gospel service at the end of the day.
8. Wednesday night, July 30 we will be continuing our study of the security of the believer from John 10:28-30. This is one of the clearest passages on this blessed doctrine. Come for supper at 5:30 PM and stay for the study at 6:30 PM in Fellowship Hall. Be sure and bring your Bible.
2008 Smith County Fair Booth Information
The ministry booth at the fair is for the purpose of sharing Jesus with the community. As a church and as individual Christians we represent Jesus and seek to exalt Him in all we do. The fair provides a great opportunity to establish connections with people in the community and express the compassion of Jesus to them. Please consider our mission and purpose in your dress and conduct while in the ministry booth.
We will plan to have teams in the booth each evening from 5:30 – 8:30 PM and Saturday from 10 AM – 8:30 PM. The current schedule of workers is on the back of this sheet. The coordinators for each day will be responsible for getting the supplies you need for the booth. They are also your contact if you can not come on the day you have selected. Feel free to come by the booth and help at additional times as your schedule permits.
The ministry activities will include:
· Ice Water – We will have coolers and cups available for people at the Fair. We give the ice water freely in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
· EvangeCubes will be available each night to open the door for you to share the gospel as the Lord gives you opportunity. Pick up a sheet and become familiar with the pictures and what they represent.
· Fans – We will have 500 hand-fans to distribute at the fair. I suggest we hand out 100 per night to help ration them through the week. Any left over from one night can be given out the next night or whenever needed.
· Face Painting – We will have face painting supplies at the booth for you to use. There are stamps in the supplies that you can paint and then press on the child’s face. That makes for an easier face painting for artistically challenged individuals.
· Balloon Animals – Materials will be available if you have this skill.
· We will have tracts available for people to take with them and read. Children will especially like several of the titles. We will also have an information card with church service times.
· Prayer Request Box – We will have available Prayer Request Cards from our Prayer Ministry for people passing by to have their prayer requests prayed for during the next 30-60 days. You may also want to pray with them at the booth.
If you have needs arise contact your coordinator or call Tim Frank at 931 261-8452 or 735-9615.
Before you leave the booth area please clean up and have it ready for the next night. The coordinators will bring the water cooler to the Fellowship Hall to be used the next night.
Take time to visit and talk with the people who come by the booth. They are your focus. We are there to minister to the needs of the people at the fair.
Have a great time ministering in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
