FBC Carthage E-News
January 26, 2009
Good afternoon,
Today’s e-news is slightly delayed because of a meeting I had this morning at the Baptist Colligate Ministry (BSU) at Tennessee Tech. As a student many years ago, the BSU had a great impact in my life. Life long friends, life direction in ministry and meeting my wife Fran all came at the BSU. I encourage all our college students to check out the Baptist Colligate Ministry (BCM) on your campus. This ministry of the Tennessee Baptist Convention is made possible through our giving through the Cooperative Program. Lives are impacted by the work and ministry of the BCM. It may not be for all students but it was a great blessing to me and Fran.
Remember to pray this week for Jim, Karen and Colin Wilburn as they prepare for their trip to their new home in King’s Park, New York. Pictures are still on the web site home page of their home and church. Take a minute this week to write them a note of encouragement and send it to them at their new home. Their address is:
Jim and Karen Wilburn
25 W. Main St
King’s Park, NY 11754
Continue to pray for the Personnel Committee as they seek the Lord’s guidance for a new Minister of Music.
The Wednesday night Bible study will be studying John 16:1-4 and finishing up a three session study of the persecution of Christians in the early church, the reformation and recent times. Join us at 6:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall and remember that supper is served from 5:00 – 6:00 PM each Wednesday.
Sunday morning we will continue in our series on Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5:17-20. Sunday night we will be studying the life of Moses and the exodus of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage. Invite a friend to attend with you this week.
Have a blessed week and I will see you at FBC Carthage.
Bro. Tim

2. Attention Couples! Valentine’s Day is Coming!
Saturday, February 14 is Valentine’s Day and we will have a special couple’s dinner and movie night in the Family Life Center beginning at 5:30 PM. The cost will be $20 per couple and will include a beautiful dinner catered by Robbie’s, the movie and a special gift. We will watch the movie Fireproof which shares a strong message on love and marriage. Sign-up by calling or e-mailing the church office.
3. Saturday, February 14 is “We Have a Heart for You” day in which everyone is challenged to do kind deeds for others. Read the article from the Tennessee Baptist and Reflector for more information: http://www.tnbaptist.org/BRARticle.asp?ID=279
4. We have had several Sunday’s of great attendance. I hope you will take a few minutes before and after the services to make the people around you feel welcome. If you don’t know them introduce yourself. Tell them about Sunday School and other events of the church. If others are sitting by them, introduce them. A good rule of thumb is to great several people before you sit down in your seat. An equally good idea is to great several other people before you leave after church. Let’s go out of our way to make people feel welcome at First Baptist.
5. If you are planning to use the Christian Life Center, please contact Deborah at the church office to make a reservation and to ensure that others do not have it reserved for that same time. This applies to all uses of the building. Do not assume that the building is available. Groups with reservations will have priority in the case of a schedule overlap.
6. Many were present to hear Kenny Stevens from Siberia, Russia as he spoke during a Wednesday night service in 2008. Here is a special poem written by his 15 year-old daughter, Kayla of living in Siberia:
For a class this year, Kayla wrote this poem relating to the culture in which we live. I had no part in the work, but I was able to read the finished product. When I did, I cried. She captured the beauty of the place we live and the importance of nature to our people in one of the poems. She decided to submit the poem, Nature, in a contest at school. Around Christmas we learned she won! We were all pleased, and I thought many of you may enjoy reading the poem as it paints a beautiful word picture of what we see here. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Nature by Kayla Stevens
The grey sky’s rain washes off the snow’s white,
And the brown mud takes its turn.
Then the sun emerges to shed his light,
And the green grass grows with the flowers bright
To soften the rocks on the mountain heights.
And the river goes softly splashing and swirling – sliding onward evermore
Then the sun rules over the summer skies,
And his heat begins to burn.
And the lake and shade are sought by the wise,
And flowers and grass continue to rise
As the hills roll on in their endless lines.
And the river goes softly splashing and swirling – sliding onward evermore
Then the overcast skies dim the sun’s crown;
The world looks suddenly stern.
And the earth loses her summer’s green gown
And the pines turn to sentries looking down
From their mountainous towers with a frown.
And the river goes softly splashing and swirling – sliding onward evermore
Then winter, she comes in her cloak of white,
And fall’s dismal court adjourns.
And the wind’s icy fingers pry and bite,
While downy flakes fall over snowball fights
On the cleanly blanketed mountain heights.
And the river goes softly splashing and swirling – sliding onward evermore
